There was a huge empty spot on the wall and an old brass coat hook on the back of the door. The ancient coat hanger had at long last broken off underneath the weight of too some years of jackets and winter coats. The demise of that old hook was the starting point of a room redesign we had been putting off for far too long.

The room in question was a little applied family room at the back of the house. The room had been partitioned off years before from the garage by a former owner. It was long and narrow, with a picture window along one wall and a hand-built brick fireplace at the far end. The walls were sheathed in rough-cut knotty pine that had been stained at least a dozen times and were now a uniform dull gray. The textured ceiling and imagination crown molding, along with the solid walnut mantelpiece over the brick fireplace, gave the room an antiquate and rustic feel that we wanted to preserve and enhance.

To get started we emptied the room of the assembled boxes, bits of furniture and bric-a-brac that seem to accrete like sea floor sediments wherever there’s extra storage space in a house, then we cleaned and scrubbed the place thoroughly. We had forgotten in regards to the parquet wooden floor tiles that we had concealed beneath an old braided rug when we introductory moved in.

Since the knotty pine had been stained so a great deal of times, we knew a new coat of stain could do not one thing to relieve the gray dullness, so we opted for a thick coat of semi-gloss latex paint. We agonized over the color, but in the end decisive on a habit light green color, called Mint, that complimented the dark walnut of the mantelpiece and the darkly varnished crown molding and trim. It looked great, and after a new coat of bright white on the ceiling, the room was ready to decorate.

The old coat hook came off the door, pictures were hung, shelves installed. A new area carpet went on the floor and a recliner and a love seat and lamps and end tables were positioned just right. Then the centerpiece of the new room, the 64″ flat screen television, was installed above the mantel. It was perfect.

Except for that big empty spot on the wall by the door. We solved that last problem with a shelved coat rack with four antiqued brass coat hooks that fit utterly in the space.

We held marveling why we had never done anything with the space before.
