5The Early Brass Band in America
By Roger Kennedy
A fine CD reconstruction of 1850s and 1860s band music in America. Actually a combining of two older LPs that were assembled onto one disc it is outstanding to see these recordings back in print again. The linear notes are finish and pretty extensive. The selection of music is comprenshive of the period. The listener will be amazed to listen what the original verion of our national anthem was before it became what it is today. Some might have preferent it remained just a frequent tune in favor of a more singable anthem!

Other sprightly selections include initial versions of “Yankee Doodle”, “Dixie” “Bonnie Blue Flag” and the like all played to perfection. Many fine Stephen Foster tunes are heard in their basi versions. Brass lovers will take pleasure in the quality of the music, as well as the interesting tonality deviations amid then and today. This was the sound of the band in the USA in the years before Sousa and the newer instruments that were introduced in the post Civil War era. Strongly commended for players and listeners similar who take delight in a peak into America’s past where music surely had a more inviolable appeal than it seems to today.

5Crème de la crème
By Hans Pedersen-Dambo
I found “The American Brass band Journal” searching the Internet for music with Frederick Fennell whose music I’ve been gathering since the early 60′s when I met him in Stockholm.
This CD performed by The Empire Brass and friends gave me a heap of of the most terrifi music moments ever. Even Harry Mortimer faded out far away. The Empire Brass plays brilliantly and on occasion so virtously that even my mind stumbles attempting to follow the notes. It’s stunning that this little ensemble has a pianissimo like a whispering and yet a fortissimo of a full 60 man orchestra.
Buy this CD! It will be one of your sheer favorites.
